Guide to Fort Langley

Fort Langley is somewhere I’ve grown to love.  If you’re the type of person who loves to wander around and shop, all while enjoying a good latte then this guide is for you.

My all time favourite coffee shop. Have been coming here since I was a kid as my mom loved this place. Even if there’s no sentimental value for you, this place has charm. It’s half bookstore half cafe. It also happens to be the only spot I will order a Mocha, they even have sugar-free mochas and yes they are that good. They have breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you visit it will be hard to leave without buying yourself a treat from the display case. Consider yourself warned.

Blacksmith Bakery

Hopefully you’re lucky enough to snag one of their earl grey cream puffs. Lunch and latte’s are pretty good here too.

Bella & Wren

Fort Langley’s gem for the fashionista. No shortage of on trend styles here. Plus they have local pop-ins on Saturdays. Sort of like a mini market but for all things beauty, health, and fashion. Be sure to check who’s in next.

You could spend hours browsing through their jewelry selection from local Canadian brands like Melanie Auld, Leah Alexandra, Lover’s Tempo and Pyrrha to name some of my faves.

Here you’ll also find brands such as Matt & Nat, Mackage, Levi’s, Smash & Tess, Brunette the Label, and PJ salvage.

It’s an excellent spot to treat yourself or to find gifts or an outfit for an upcoming birthday or special event.

Be sure to visit their sister store Bella & Wren home + Fort and Co. (Which is like the big brother of Bella & Wren, tailored for the outdoorsy type.)

Bella & Wren Home

One of my all time favourite stores to browse. From local Tofino Towel Co to Barefoot Dreams this store is dreamy. You’ll find beauty scrubs, candles and diffusers, Rifle-Paper Co cards, Sugarfina candies, housewares, towels and throws and maybe even a rotary phone.

A more recently discovered floral shop as it’s off the beaten path a little. Just follow the florals.

A cute local shop that sells their own jewelry. Excellent store to find stacking pieces or statement jewelry. They also have cute little gifts inside.

The Living Room

Authentic Moroccan poufs at a good price! Local candles. This is one shop you will fall in love with.

Vintage thrift shop

This is a place I’ve been introduced to through my Grandma. She loves a good thrift shop and the place is massive. If you’re looking to get your thrift on, especially with good china, 70s bowls, silverware, trays and other treasures then be sure to check it out.

Healthy Gauc

+ Big pinch of Himalayan salt

+ Big handful of cilantro, chopped coarsely

Scoop avocado into medium bowl, add lime juice and salt. Smash avocado with large dinner fork and fold together. Add cilantro and mix evenly!

Summer Weekday in Whistler

Just a short drive from Vancouver.. The Four Seasons is the one hotel in Whistler that I just keep coming back to and I love. The service is outstanding and it really has that whole Whistler vibe going on.

Pool season is very much in full swing and I love a good pool day. Grab a book and head to the pool area.

Ask for the Poolside favourite when ordering a drink.

Wander Whistler Village and get a candy apple from Rocky Mountain Chocolate.

The pizza from SIDECUT is soooo good + a late night room service order of Creme Brulee.

Hy’s Steakhouse

The cheese toast is everything!

Then go catch some zzzz’s in the newly renovated rooms!

That’s it for now. Until next time..

Happy Weekending!

“Plastic-Less” July

I might be a little late to the party with this post.. but better late than never right?

I have been seeing this trending hashtag all around this month #plasticfreejuly. While completely cutting out plastic is hard as it seems we can’t get away from it, what about reducing the amount we use? Or becoming more conscious and aware of how we are choosing to use plastic in our daily lives? I prefer to call it plastic-less july not plastic free as in today’s world we are never fully free from it are we? Let’s use plastic – less.

I know it’s hard to completely refuse plastic today as we have so many things that are made of it! Straws have been a big thing recently as more and more establishments are using paper ones. Some stores are using paper bags while many are still stuck using plastic. Some of us try our best by keeping reusable bags in our trunks and then naturally we forget to bring them in! #guilty ..Or we might think we are only grabbing a few items and then of course it turns into a bigger shop than we had initially anticipated.

In light of the trending hashtag #plasticfreejuly and recent changes to my own habits I have some tips and ideas to share with you. I’m sure you’ve heard most of them before but these are just some easy changes I have been trying to incorporate into my daily life.

Reducing the amount of plastic we use on a daily basis

Say no to plastic bags if you only have a few items and can easily carry them. Just after a few trips to the store and forgoing a bag you will start to feel good about it.

Store a foldable reusable tote bag in your purse so you’ll always be ready for a few items! Keep larger bags in your trunk. If you’re headed to the mall or a large superstore before heading out put your reusable bags on the seat so you’ll be more like to remember them.

Recycle everyday items

Rinse out plastic and paper cups from coffee etc and recycle them.

When out and about look for the recycle bins and make sure you’re putting it in the right bin! I see so many people just put them in whichever bin without reading.  (I’ve also been guilty of this in the past) It’s never too late though to become more conscious!

Something we don’t often think about recycling is our makeup containers, tubes, shampoo bottles etc. MAC has a program in which you bring back 6 empty pots of eyeshadow to get a FREE lipstick! Maybe you don’t buy that much eyeshadow or shop at MAC, but you could look for ways to recycle your beauty product empties. The plastic ones can be rinsed out and recycled with your plastics, depending on where you live. I encourage you to do your own research.

Bring reusable items with you

Bring reusable cups/travel mugs for your daily coffee, water, smoothie whatever!

Carry a reusable water bottle with you everywhere you go. And on that note get yourself a pretty water bottle. Swell + Hydro flask + BKR are my favs.

Get yourself a travel mug. I personally like Klean Kanteen + Yeti.

The Market Bags These are soooo good for on the go snacks or produce/bulk bags and are machine washable. Plus they are super cute! I also love the fact that they are a small and local company. The fabric is upcycled so if you see a print that you like, make sure to buy it as it won’t be around forever.

Mesh reusable bags for fruit, veg etc. Doubles as a cute purse or beach bag.

Glass straws are great for at home use and another alternative that I like are silicone straws.

Ways to do your part to help keep our oceans clean

Not only forgoing single use plastic where you can but making any of the above efforts will ultimately help keep our oceans clean.

One company I’ve noticed that is doing their part to help keep our oceans clean is Bright Swimwear.

Use my code: BLONDE15 for 15% OFF any of their swimwear.

10% of proceeds goes to cleaning up our oceans.

I hope this post made you feel positive. And remember any effort is big. Forgoing a bag once is amazing even if you don’t do it all the time. And don’t feel bad for what you’re not doing. Everybody has different lifestyles. The point of this post was to hopefully inspire you to use a little less plastic if you can. Be kind people!

My Stay at The Parker Palm Springs

First off…

The decor and overall vibe of this place is insane. Over-the-top. Eccentric. Alive. Those are just a few words I would use to describe The Parker.

I am seriously obsessed with the Jonathan Adler and 50’s, 60’s inspired decor in this place. Serious vibes! I’ll be honest I may have vacationed here just for the gram but I did also want to find out why everyone loved this place so much! I can honestly say I now know why…

The grounds.. I mean come on!

First after walking through their cool lobby you’ll walk out to the gardens full of lush green bushes, following a dirt path..

there’s lots of area to explore from their firepit area to their hammocks + Jonathan Adler bronze 3D printed banana statue to the paths winding down to their Lemonade Stand and pool areas.

I just felt like every turn you could wind up somewhere new and it felt magical.

The Pools

Silicon Valley Pool. This pool is located off of the Lanai rooms but is accessible by everyone. A good place to read a book + order some chips + salsa.

The Gene Autry Pool. This saline pool is giving off serious lush jungle vibes.

There is also an indoor pool in the Spa which you have access to but we didn’t end up using.

The Decor

Okay, so let’s talk more about the decor + vibe of this place.

I’ve actually been obsessing over all the decor and even called to find out what the art piece above the beds in the room were to source it. Apparently Jonathan Adler had it made specifically for the hotel. You can’t even buy it! And sadly the Parker isn’t selling any.

Jonathan Adler designed this hotel and incorporated many of his pieces into the rooms creating a fun, unique and whimsical experience.

If you have watched the shining you may want to know beforehand that the carpet is a replica from the movie.. we were told about it upon arrival and checking in as we were being shown to our room. Thankfully I haven’t seen it!

You can find some similar Jonathan Adler inspired decor ideas on my Pinterest.

The Rooms

The rooms were incredibly chic! The specific room we were in was quite spacious. It has sort of an old Hollywood charm it. The Hermes soap was a nice touch.

North building

We stayed in 12 North. We booked our room with a private hammock + seating area. Not going to lie, I’m not sure if it was worth the price of the room. I loved that it felt private and was quiet in the north building but I think next time I’d rather spend the money on a room that leads out to the pool, maybe one of their ‘Lanai’ rooms instead. We didn’t end up using the hammock. No, not even for an Instagram picture sadly. There was sand underneath and it just didn’t seem all that appealing if I’m being totally honest. We preferred the hammocks out in the gardens surrounded by greenery + grass beneath.

Breakfast is seriously so good I can’t. If I could have their latte every morning + any of their pancakes I’d be in heaven.

Lemonade Stand

Good if you want some chips and guac and a fresh squeezed lemonade.

The Lobby Bar

I cannot get enough of the seating in the lobby + their cocktails were so good. The 60s fireplace in the middle with moroccan poufs was a really cool feature and it just had this fun laidback vibe. If you’re lucky you’ll get to snag their hanging chairs for a minute.

I’ve also been obsessed with their playlist. Search up The Parker Palm Springs Mister Parker playlist on Spotify! They were seriously playing the best laid back cool music. We were literally sitting there wanting to Shazam every song.

The Service

The service is outstanding. From the guy who showed us to our room, to the Manager on staff at Normas.

This place was truly just such a fun experience! I can say I will definitely be back. This, I am certain, is one hotel you won’t be bored of.

Celery Juicing

So I’ve heard so many benefits from drinking celery juice on an empty stomach in the morning that I thought I would give it a whirl.

Day 1

Juiced 16oz of celery which is a whole stalk. An hour later I am feeling more alert and awake. My brain feels clear and not in it’s usual foggy state before I’ve had my coffee.

Day 2

Didn’t notice too much of a difference other than feeling more alert.

Day 3

Celery juice tastes a little sour today. Normally it tastes like celery but almost sweet. I actually enjoy the taste of it!

Definitely noticing increased energy throughout the day!

Day 4

I’m more regular than usual. TMI but for the sake of an honest review…

Day 5

Took my celery juice to go. I enjoyed drinking it in the car on the way to my destination.

I think I need to try it for a little longer to see the long term benefits. But I will definitely keep it up! My mom said my skin looked glowy.

I also lost a couple pounds this week granted I did follow a high protein, low carb, low sugar diet. But celery juice is good for weight loss.

Tips for Juicing

Don’t juice the leaves as it can make the taste bitter

Drink first thing in the morning on an empty stomach

Drink 16oz for maximum benefits (juice one stalk)

Fun facts

It actually primes your digestion for the rest of the day

It helps with inflammation

It boosts your immune system

There are many other good reasons to drink celery juice. I encourage you to do your own research.

Happy Juicing!

3 Days in the OC

Where to Stay

Monarch Beach Resort

Ok this place is everything. It’s a beautiful hotel located in Dana point area. The pool area is a dream + the rooms are beautiful. It’s just off the PCH and within a quick driving distance to Laguna, Newport Beach etc.

Book a walk out fireplace room where you can walk out to the courtyard area or pool directly from your room. They will also supply you with a smores kit for roasting marshmallows over your own personal fire pit.

Where to Eat

AVEO Table + Bar

Aveo does Sundays right! Their Sunday brunch is bomb. Anything + Everything you can think of. If you’re lucky enough you can get a table outside on their patio with the fire pit overlooking the ocean and courtyard area.

Nobu Newport Beach

Nobu does Japanese food right. Located right on the water in Lido Marina Village, Nobu is a cool spot for dinner. The patio is beautiful on a warm night. Their patio overlooks the marina and you can watch the boats come in and out. Nobu is definitely share style and is fun with a group. I’ve been to other Nobu locations but I have to say that Newport Beach location is a favourite. I love the ambiance and the massive wood staircase leading up away from their lounge area to the dining area. Have a cocktail while a dj spins downstairs before being seated at your table.

Alessa Laguna Beach

Located in the heart of Laguna Beach, Alessa, is great for an intimate dinner on their patio or fun for a more casual vibe with friends. Always ask for the patio. Their Cali Cali pizza is soooo good. Avocado on pizza.. nothing says California more. Or opt for one of their many yummy pastas. I’ve been here on a few occasions and this little restaurant definitely has me coming back. If you’re waiting for a table be sure to put your name in and browse some of the shops on the streets close by.

Babette’s Newport Beach

Best breakfast spot. I’ve been to Babette’s on a few occasions, the first time was for my cousins girls breakfast before her wedding. Great spot for brunch with your girls or with your significant other. My favs are a Lavendar Latte + The Don Omlette. I wouldn’t have thought of ordering sweet potatoe fries with breakfast but it’s surprisingly so good. If you are thinking of heading to the beach or on a hike somewhere get some of their cold pressed juice + their rosemary chips to go. They also do wraps and salads to go. Crystal Cove is just across the street on the other side of the PCH.

Bourbon Steakhouse

A new steakhouse in the OC. Bourbon is actually located in The Monarch. Delicious steaks + yummy sides.

Sprinkles Cupcakes

I love Sprinkles. They have a few locations but if you are in the area drive along the PCH and stop to get some seriously delicious cupcakes. They are on Avocado ave. How cute!

Where to Shop

Lido Marina Village

Lido Village Books

The cutest little bookstore.

Alchemy Works Harbour House

Faherty I just adore this brand.

Planet Blue

Love their maxi dresses!

Le Labo

Le Labo I fell in love with Le Labo after staying in the Fairmont hotels and became acquainted with their signature scent Rose 31. I first discovered Santal 33 here at Le Labo in Lido Marina Village + fell in love. Now the scent reminds me of California and everything that California dreams are made of. Be careful as this scent is addictive! Le Labo has other bath products, perfumes, candles, oils + lotions.

Clare V

Looking for a new tote or handbag? Look no further than Clare V.

Serena + Lily

Currently crushing on all their furniture and home goods.

Sweaty Betty

Love their workout gear!

South Coast Plaza

They have everything.

Where to Beach

Monarch Bay

Take the tram for hotel guests down from The Monarch to the beach. You could walk but it is a bit of a trek and the beach tram is seriously cool. The private beach is for hotel guests or people living on the golf course.

Once you reach the beach there is a private club down there where you can order drinks or food and sit in the restaurant or take it out to the chairs or sit on the beach and enjoy it.

They have a guy down there you can get towels, chairs and umbrellas from. Outdoor showers are also provided to rinse off before you head back up from the beach.

This spot is perfect for watching the waves rolling in and out or for talking a walk on the beach. From time to time you can catch a few surfers doing their thing.

Newport Beach

Worth checking out if you are in the area. The wedge is cool too.

Crystal Cove

Good area for a hike or if you are there in the morning check out the Beachcomber and enjoy their delicious coconut macadamia nut pancakes.

How to stay healthy in 2019

It all starts with self care and self love. Take time for yourself… in whatever way that means to you.

Some of the ways I stay mentally healthy are:

Digital Detox

We spend so much time on our phones and never really know when to quit. Make a habit of going without a phone before bed or in the morning when you first wake up. Put down the phone in the am before scrolling on Instagram. Spend this time alone with yourself. Put your phone on the charger at night and read a book before heading to bed. Just simply eliminating the phone during these times will help clear your mind to be productive in the morning and to get a good night’s sleep.

Eat Clean

Be mindful while eating and choose healthier options. Try to do more cooking and make it fun by trying out a new recipe at least once a month.

This could mean using essential oils, lighting a candle or salt lamp, pampering yourself or reading a book while cozying up in your favourite spot.

Take time to check in with yourself. How are you feeling today? At this moment? Journalling can be a good way to do some healthy self reflection and to put thoughts on paper.

Surround yourself with people who lift you up and support you. Eliminate toxic relationships.

Staying organized will make you feel calm and at ease. I use a bullet journal simply for keep tracking of my tasks daily + monthly. I have found this to be one of the greatest organizational systems one could use. I also use Google Calendar. Google Calendar is fun because you can colour code all your appointments etc. I’ve started scheduling in everything. I mean everything… from appointments to time for myself to coffee with friends + family. And bonus it syncs up to your phone calendar!

Try to be active

Even if it’s just a small walk every day. Getting out in nature for a quick walk can also do wonders for your mood and overall health.

Celebrate small victories

Enjoy the little things and treat yourself once in a while, whether its a new skin scrub or a coffee.

And of course Travel

Travelling opens your eyes to new experiences and sometimes new cultures. A change of scenery can even boost your happiness.

Never stop adventuring!

Last Minute Maple Salted Granola

I decided to try Chrissy Teigen’s Salted Maple Granola a few weeks back. It’s so quick and easy and makes such a beautiful gift! It’s a little sweet but a little salty. And really good on top of plain greek yogurt or with berries!

+ 3 c old-fashioned rolled oats

+ 1/2 c unsweetened finely shredded coconut

+ 1/2 c chopped pecans

+ 1/2 c sliced almonds

+ 1/4 c sunflower seeds

I omitted sunflower seeds, you could add them or any type of seeds or nuts

+ 1/2 c vegetable oil or melted coconut oil

I used coconut oil

+ 1/2 c maple syrup

+ 1/3 c packed light brown sugar

+ 2 tsp vanilla extract

+ 2 1/2 tsp kosher salt

+ 1 c chopped dried cherries

The result is simply beautiful and tasty granola

In a large bowl combine oats, coconut, pecans, almonds, and and seeds you may have added.

In a small bowl whisk together oil, maple syrup, brown sugar, vanilla, and salt. Add to the oat mixture + toss together.

Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread the granola on the baking sheet.

Bake at 350F for 25 to 30 minutes stirring occasionally until golden brown

Once cooled add to clean bowl + stir in dried cherries

Put into a mason jar + wrap some ribbon around it. Would make a great Holiday gift!

Can be stored in airtight container for up to two weeks
